Julie Barker
Who is Ms. Julie Barker?
I am an innovative educator with over 30 years of experience teaching AP Physics, Honors Physics, and a variety of science electives. I serve as Science Department Chair at Cheshire High School and as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Connecticut (UCONN), both at the UCONN Waterbury Campus and through the UCONN Early College Experience (ECE) Program. I bring high-level academic expertise and a deep passion for student success to my tutoring. I have also served as an AP® Reader for the College Board, giving me insight into scoring criteria, common student pitfalls, and the strategies needed to master AP® Physics exams.
At the heart of my approach is building meaningful, supportive relationships; meeting students where they are, understanding how they learn best, and creating a comfortable space where asking questions and making mistakes are simply part of the learning process.
Central to my teaching philosophy is empowering students to become independent critical thinkers through dynamic, practice-driven learning. Drawing on modern "Building Thinking Classrooms" frameworks and hands-on science and engineering practices, I adapt to each student's unique learning style—whether demystifying calculus-based AP® Physics C concepts, breaking down mechanics, or building conceptual confidence in introductory physics.
Honored as a CT State Finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) in 2025 and a recipient of multiple UCONN Excellence in Teaching awards, my goal is to make challenging concepts accessible, engaging, and rewarding. If you're ready to build real confidence and excel in Physics, reach out and take your learning to the next level!
